Sheet pile wall secures flood dam in Michelau

Sheet pile wall secures flood dam in Michelau

The municipality of Michelau has been protected from flooding by dikes in recent years. However, these could not provide sufficient protection. A high number of private houses and commercial enterprises would be affected in the event of a disaster. The desire for a dam renovation became greater in the community, not least because of the devastating flood in 2013.
In summer 2016 SÜLZLE Nutzeisen supplied about 565 tons of sheet piles with interlock seal for this project. The 4 m long sheet pile walls were sealed accordingly by SÜLZLE Nutzeisen and are thus almost impermeable to water. The necessary dike heightening was achieved by a concrete wall put on the dike. This wall is placed on top of the inner dike seal. The new inner seals are like a life insurance for the dikes. By installing the steel sheet pile walls, it was possible to raise and secure the dikes in Michelau without taking away the expansion area of the river in the floodplain. Moreover, according to the experts, this method additionally stabilizes a dam. These measures have effectively strengthened the dikes and will offer residents optimum protection from the Main River in the future.
